What to know before making changes to your Twitter Identity

The good news is that it is really easy to change both your Twitter display name and username.  Your Twitter profile identity is made up of two parts;

Twitter username: This is the part with the ‘@’ symbol and is sometimes referred to as your handle. It is also the name that is in the URL address and can be up to 15 characters long.

Twitter display name: This is your identifier or what you want people to call you by. It is located above your Twitter username.  This can be up to 50 characters long.

Why would you change your Twitter Identity?

There are lots of reasons why you might want to change your identity on Twitter.

  1. Online harassment or bullying – Make sure that if you are changing for this reason that you plan the change. This way you can update both the username, display name, photos, etc in one move and also block those that you want to.
  2. Professionalism – Perhaps you have outgrown your previous name but do not want to lose your fan base or have started a new job that prevents you from having a social media presence.

Any other tips for changing your Twitter page?

Just because you have changed your Twitter profile and given it a new name and identity it does not mean that you have to lose the old identity altogether. Instead, why not change your Twitter username and display name to a new name of your choice and once done re-register your old username and display name by creating a new account. You will need to have a different email address but there are no regulations to how many Twitter accounts you can own. By doing this you can still receive messages on the other account and point people to your new account, or alternatively you can post a pinned tweet advising anyone who searches for you of your new identity.
