How to change the desktop background picture

If you would like to change your desktop background picture to an image or photo you like, there are two sets of instructions below. The first is very simple but if for some reason that does not work try the second way.

How to change the desktop background picture in Windows 10

  1. Navigate to the image you wish to set as the desktop background
  2. Right-click the image
  3. From the menu select Set as desktop background.

You can also change the desktop background picture by going to the Personalize Windows settings, below are instructions.

  1. Go to the desktop (Shortcut is to press the Windows key and D together)
  2. Right-click any blank area of the desktop
  3. Select Personalize from the menu
  4. If the Background tab on the left is not already selected, you should select it.
  5. Under the image of the desktop, you will see the word Background
  6. Below that is a drop-down menu with the words Picture, Solid colour, or Slideshow.
  7. Select Picture
  8. Below you will see an option to select the picture you want to be the desktop background.
  9. If the picture you want is shown, simply select it. Otherwise, select Browse and navigate to the picture location.
  10. Once selected you can change the way the picture appears on the desktop in the next drop down list. Fill will select the single image to cover the entire desktop.

It is worth noting that when you change the desktop background image you should pick an image in both size and quality that it looks good when expanded to cover the entire desktop.

How to change the desktop background picture to a slideshow in Windows 10

There are also options to have a slideshow of pictures. To do this you will first need to create a folder of the images you wish to use in the slideshow. Then follow the steps below to change the desktop background picture to a slideshow.

  1. Go to the desktop (Shortcut is to press the Windows key and D together)
  2. Right-click any blank area of the desktop
  3. Select Personalize from the menu
  4. If the Background tab on the left is not already selected, you should select it.
  5. Under the image of the desktop, you will see the word Background
  6. Below that is a drop-down menu with the words Picture, Solid colour, or Slideshow.
  7. Select  Slideshow
  8. Below you will see an option to Browse select it.
  9. You will need to navigate to the location of the folder containing your chosen background images. 
  10. Click the button Choose this folder to select it.
  11. You will see there are three further options on the background settings page 
  12. The first is Change picture every. Select the time frame you want the picture to be on the desktop before it changes.
  13. The second is Choose a fit. You can change the way the pictures appears on the desktop. Fill will make the images cover for the entire desktop. Choose the setting that best suits your pictures.
  14. The third and final option is to turn Shuffle on or off. If shuffle is turned on the pictures within your folder will display randomly. When shuffle is turned off the pictures will follow the folder order.
