It can be very frustrating to receive a Youtube link and then have to search through the video to find the exact place the sender was talking about. But it does not have to be difficult because you can send links that start the clip at the exact moment you want them to.

In the example below, we will show you how to send the video trailer for the film Basic Instinct. Except we will remove the first 12 seconds and set the clip to start where the movie trailer starts.

  1. Navigate to the Youtube video 
  2. Play the video until you are at the place you want the clip to start playing. See our example below
  3. Pause the clip by pressing the Space bar
  4. Select Share from the menu below the clip (as shown below)
  5. A new window will open. Tick the box (as shown below)
  6. Preview (opens in a new tab)
  7. You will notice the link changes
  8. Click the copy link (as shown below)
  9. You will now have a link to the exact moment you wanted. Press CTRL + V to paste the link (https://youtu.be/wLGx5YT6sOg?t=12)

Why would you want to send a link to a specific part of a YouTube video?

There are many reasons as to why you would want to do this, in our example we choose a short clip but what if the clip you wanted to send was 15 minutes long. It would be tiresome for the receiver to search for the moment you mentioned. Another reason would be if the video covered multiple topics but you are only interested in one.

Are there alternatives to sending a Youtube clip at a specific part?

Yes you could send the clip link stating the time the part you are referring to starts or you could embed the video into a website. Some email providers also allow you to us the embed code in an email.

How do I get the embed code to a specific part of a YouTube video?

  1. Navigate to the Youtube video
  2. Play the video until you are at the place you want the clip to start playing. See our example below
  3. Then Pause the clip by pressing the Space bar
  4. Select Share from the menu below the clip (as shown below)
  5. A new window will open. Tick the box as shown by the arrow below
  6. A new window will open (as shown below)
  7. Tick the‘Start at Time’ box (Arrow 1)
  8. Click the link to Copy (Arrow 2)
  9. You will now have an Embed Video code link to the exact moment you wanted. Press CTRL + V to paste the link
